Elective Course Descriptions


Acting I
This is a fun, introductory acting course designed to familiarize students with the vocabulary and history of theatre, acting exercises, movement, characterization, dramatic structure, 
improvisation, pantomime, and scenes.

Advanced Manufacturing Technology I
New course for 9th grade only. This program offers a sequence of courses that provides relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the manufacturing career. It also provides technical skill proficiency, and includes, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills,work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the manufacturing career. This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills to prepare students for employment in Advanced Manufacturing and Production positions. Advanced Manufacturing Technology levels 2-4 will honors level.

Aerospace Science (JROTC)
Air Force JROTC is a citizenship program. Students learn how to march, basic physical fitness, basic values and core principles such as “Integrity First,” “Service Before Self,” and “Excellence in all we do.” Cadets learn how to be successful in life, establish goals, develop leadership skills, and how to contribute to our communities. Cadets study Aviation History and Space Exploration from early days of flight to future missions. Students learn life skills, military courtesies, personal behavior, stress management and healthy living. There is no obligation to join the military. Fun includes parties, a dance and Field Day.

Agriscience Foundations
This is a Honors level course that qualifies as an equally rigorous science credit for graduation and admission to most colleges. This course is designed to develop competencies in the areas of agricultural history and the global impact of agriculture; career opportunities; scientific and research concepts; biological and physical science principles; environmental principles; agriscience safety; principles of leadership; and agribusiness, employability, and human relations skills in agriscience. Laboratory-based activities are an integral part of this course. These include the safe use and application of appropriate technology, scientific testing and observation equipment. An industry certification exam is available at the end of the course.

Band
This course is intended for students who have prior band experience. Band meets as a class during the school day, but also requires additional after school practices.

Biology Honors
For Medical Academy students only. Biology is the study of living organisms. It is a requirement for graduation. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the following: scientific method, water properties, macromolecules, enzymes, cells, microscopes, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, ATP, plants (organs and tissues, cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis, genetics, DNA/RNA, protein synthesis, biotechnology, evolution, natural selection, taxonomy, ecology, water cycle, carbon cycle, ecosystems and body systems. There is a lab component to earning Biology credit.

Carpentry
Open to 9th and 10th grade students. The purpose of this course is for the student to continue developing competencies essential to the carpentry profession. These competencies include site preparation and layout, building foundations, engineered structural lumber and floor system framing.

Chorus I
This class is intended for students with previous middle school experience. Students with music reading and singing experience will be considered. All students in this class will be auditioned. Contact esterj@flaglerschools.com for more information on auditioning.

Computer Science Discoveries
Open to 9th–12th grade students. This is a math credit. The course focuses on problem solving and communication and encourages students to explore the impact of computers on society. Units: Computing, Web Development, Interactive Animations and Games, Design Process, Data and Society, Physical Computing.

Creative Photography I
This is a beginner’s level course, though considered advanced level because of highly technical concepts and a large workload. Students will learn to operate an SLR (single lens reflex) and DSLR (digital) camera on manual mode. They will begin first by shooting film assignments (Landscape and Architecture) on their own time and finish the course by doing studio digital images (Portraits and Still Life). An industry Certification Exam is available at the end of the course.

Culinary Arts I
This course covers the history of the food service industry and careers in that industry. Also covered are safety in the workplace; employability skills; leadership/teamwork skills; care and use of commercial culinary equipment; basic food science; basic nutrition; and following recipes in food preparation labs.

Dance Technique
This course covers the fundamentals of various styles (including ballet, modern, jazz and tap). It is the prerequisite for the intermediate level classes. There are opportunities for ensemble performance, practice with performance analysis, and continuous discussions on making connections between dance and healthful living. Proper dance attire is required.

Digital Media I
The purpose of this program is to prepare students for work as multimedia artists and animators. This course provides competencies in presentation production issues, basic computer knowledge, digital still photography, and photo editing software. Students will have the opportunity to take the Adobe Photoshop certification exam. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard 
image editing software, used worldwide by professional photographers, amateur photographers, and designers who want to perfect their digital images by going beyond what is captured by the camera.

Digital Video Tech I
Lights, camera, let's go! Digital Video Technology is a class that is full of possibilities for the future of a student. This class offers life skills that are needed to become employable. Students will learn how to edit, direct and film projects. They will learn scriptwriting as well as how to create storyboards. A real-life experience by doing the news as well as film sporting events and community projects. By the time the program is complete, most students will become certified in Adobe Premiere as an editor. This class offers the opportunity for students to show their creative side while adhering to the Florida Standards required for education.

Drawing I
This entry-level studio course develops students’ foundational knowledge in various drawing media such as graphite, pen and ink, charcoal, and colored pencil. Students will become familiar with basic art concepts, cultural literacy, the elements and principles of design, art history, and art careers.

Eurhythmics I (Starlets)
Students will create, perform, and evaluate choreographed performances as an independent ensemble and in cooperation with the marching band. Emphasis is placed on dance; spinning flags, rifles and sabres; precision, and the relationship between music and dance. Students rehearse in class daily and after school 2-3 times a week. Audition is required.

Guitar I
This is an introductory course designed to help you learn many of the different styles and techniques of guitar playing. Students must have a strong desire to learn to play guitar and be willing to practice. Students will work at their own pace with teacher-defined deadlines. Basic concepts of music reading will be taught in this course. Guitars will be provided for classroom use but students will be more successful if they own a basic student guitar so they can practice at home.

HOPE (Health Opportunities through Physical Education)
The purpose of this course is to develop and enhance healthy behaviors that influence lifestyle choices and student health and fitness. Students will combine the learning of principles and background information in a classroom setting with physical application of the knowledge. A majority of class time should be spent in physical activity. This course is a graduation requirement.

Introduction to Teaching
This is the introductory course for our Future Educators Program of Study. During this course, students will have an opportunity to learn about a career in education. They will also have opportunities for field experiences.

Jazz Band
Students with experience on an instrument suited for jazz ensemble explore the fundamentals of performance practices, improvisation, and music theory through a diverse repertoire of high-quality jazz literature. Students learn the basics of foundational jazz styles, use chord symbols, develop knowledge of musical structure, and study the history of jazz and its iconic musicians. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Leadership (SGA)
This course will provide an in-depth study of the leadership techniques of decision making, problem solving, meeting skills, communication, group conflict reduction, time and stress management, evaluation, team building, group dynamics, motivational strategy, data collection for project needs, evaluation of community organizations, purpose of local government, and

Learning Strategies
The purpose of this course is to enable students with disabilities to acquire and generalize strategies and skills across academic, community, and employment settings to achieve annual goals based on assessed needs and the student's individual educational plan (IEP).

Medical Skills and Services
Introductory course for the Fire Leadership Academy and the Medical Programs of Study. During this course, students will learn about various health occupations, basic health skills, and become CPR certified. Students will also learn about factors that affect whole body wellness. An application is required for both the Fire Leadership and Medical program. Portfolio Drawing Honors
This advanced level drawing and painting studio course is designed for students who have successfully completed high school level Drawing 1. The class will continue to develop students’ foundational knowledge in various art mediums such as: graphite, watercolor, acrylic, printmaking, charcoal, and pen and ink. Students are expected to be self motivated and have a passion for their art. Students will also start to develop their “Artist Portfolio” by creating works of art dedicated to a personal theme.

Principles of Entrepreneurship
Students use their entrepreneurial skills and mindset to evolve an innovative solution to a problem into a validated business opportunity. By taking a lean startup approach in researching and testing their ideas, students activate entrepreneurial mindset behaviors that will help them in college and careers.This course is aligned to the Common Career Technical Core Standards for Business Management Administration and the National Content Standards for Entrepreneurship Education. Unique opportunities help them grasp these principles, including creating their own business plan and eventually managing their very own school-based company in Entrepreneurship level 2 and 3. This program/course is run through NFTE and DECA, which provide the opportunity for competitions for prizes.

Student Success and Career Development
This is a Daytona State College course that is offered at FPC by an FPC teacher during the school day. This course is designed to assist students in becoming engaged learners. Emphasis is on orienting students to college resources, academic expectations and career planning, time/money management, technology, student services/organizations and academic integrity. This course is a graduation requirement for students in the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.

Technical Theatre
Students focus on developing the basic tools and procedures for creating elements of technical theatre, including costumes, lighting, makeup, properties (props), publicity, scenery, and sound. Technical knowledge of safety procedures and demonstrated safe operation of theatre equipment, tools, and raw materials are central to success in this course.

Vet Assisting I
This course is open to 10th and 11th grade students and required before taking Veterinary Assisting 2. The course is designed to develop competencies in areas such as the history of the animal industry; applied scientific and technological concepts; safety; terminology; careers, companion animal breed identification; animal care and human relations skills. Veterinary Assisting 1 students gain hands on skills related to the animal and veterinary sciences through a variety of methods, including the programs Doggie Day Spa for faculty and staff.

Vocal Ensemble
Student musicians focus on building foundational music techniques, music literacy, listening skills, and aesthetic awareness. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.
