Sunshine State Scholars Named for 2022Flagler Schools is proud to announce our 2022 Sunshine State Scholars. This program highlights the top high school juniors across the state in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).

The 2022 Sunshine State Scholar for Flagler Schools is Flagler-Palm Coast High School student Shawn Zhudro. Our alternate is Isabella Tietje from Matanzas High School.

Shawn is currently enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at FPCHS. He has a weighted GPA of 5.1429. He is also a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, where he serves as the group’s vice president. Shawn has also taken part in the Future Problem Solving Program and has been a private math tutor.

Shawn has always had a passion for engineering since he first started playing with towers of blocks. While he’s not yet decided on which area of specialization he’d like to pursue, Paul says the desire to go into the engineering field has not wavered. He’s excited by the latest technological advancements constantly being designed and implemented.

Our alternate, Isabella Tietje is pursuing an AICE Diploma (Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education) at Matanzas High School. She also is dual enrolled at Daytona State College. Isabella’s weighted high school GPA is 5.025. She’s the team captain for the school’s wrestling team, is on the varsity swim team, and Mu Alpha Theta.

Isabella also has qualified for the National Scholastic Surf Association for the past four years, including qualifying for the World Surf League on the Italian team. Isabella says mathematics has long been her favorite subject and an AP Biology class sparked an interest in the medical field. However, she says environmental science has become her passion. She is intrigued by learning about the impact humans have on the environment around us.

Shawn Zhudro will now attend the two-day program at the end of March where he, and all the other Sunshine State Scholars will have the opportunity to connect with employers that specialize in the STEM fields, network with each other, as well as state colleges and universities.
